Just a hop, skip and a jump to Canada
Whop whop!
At first, I have to correct myself. The weather forecast is just accurate for 12 hour. Instead of sun, it rained all day. We have left the Cascade Inn at noon, which was very hiker friendly and got a ride to Steven Pass. This hitch hike was the worst one on the entire trail. Ge wasn't sober. We arrived well. We hiked this day 18 miles to a little lake. Including night hiking and the trail was a mess. Mud, mud and mud. I met Cheeseburger in the end of the day. 3D and V aslo showed up. Finally the sky cleared up and we could see the stars. Whop whop!
On the entire trail I have never seen Cheeseburger smiling in the morning like today. He used to look like Silvester Stalone Cliffhanger. The reason was this beautiful weather. Clear sky and sun. I took off together with 3D. Unfortunately in the wrong direction. After half a mile we couldn't see any footprints or holes from the trekking poles. We went back and found the trail again. Not a big deal. 3D and I took the first opportunity to make our 2nd breakfast and dried out our stuff. We talked a lot and when we saw the time we freaked out. Noon and 4 miles done. Record. This area is similar to the Sierras. Snow covered mountains and an opem view. It looked so beautiful as the fog crawled over the ridge.
The next day started with a little uphill. On the left you could see Mount Baker in the North and when I've reached the summit, I could see the entire valley and Glacier Peak. On the way down I met an old guy. He just said "Here is everything out of control" and smiled. Back then, near the Three Sisters I met a guy named Solar Sam. He was southbounding. I saw him again this day and we couldn't figure out where we met us until he said "Three Sisters". Thank you. On the way down I saw Glacier Peak which was a nice one. In the late afternoon we dropped about 3600 feet and now, I understood the guy who was telling me "Everything is out of control". Logs on the trail, mud everywhere and sometimes there isn't even a trail. We stood right in front of a big hole. Wow. It was already dark and we were tired. But there was no camping. So we camped right on the bridge. We used rocks to set up our tents. I tightened one rock with the guidelines on each side and threw them over the bridge. Do you know the movie "Madagascar". There is the scene when the zebra set up his bar at the beach in the movie. He just pulled a line and everything popped into place. This was exactly the same.
As appetizer I ate two bars, as the main dish I had 3000 feet up and as dessert, coffee and cornflakes. It was a good start in the new day. The view was amazing. But it last only for one hour. Because I hiked down again. The Cascades are more like a roller coaster without getting sick. Except the logs on the trail. We arrived at the junction where the old and the new PCT splitted. We wasn't sure what to do. The new PCT is 5 miles longer than the old one and lead you over a new bridge. Additionally, you will see some big trees. The old PCT is not maintained and instead of a bridge you have a big log to cross the river. What sounds like more fun. We looked at the map and laughed. The new PCT goes way out of the way. Definitely we won't take the new one. I have to say "not maintained" isn't true. It was better maintained than the main trail and there were also some big trees. More exciting was the log over the Suiattle River. Don't make a wrong step unless you want to take a bath. To our campsite it was another 7 miles and 2500 feet up. Phrase from Lost and Found "This trail is for babies". But before we got there we had to pass Cloudy Pass. Cloudy and rainy.
I woked up in the morning and it was freaking cold. 6000 feet of elevation and almost freezing temperatures. That screams for snow and it did. We just threw our stuff in our backpack and started our 19 miles hike to Stehekin. 4000 feet down. After 2 hours I ran into Polar Bear and Cheeseburger. They told me that we are just 12 miles away from Stehekin. Wow. 7 miles in2 hours. Not bad. I kept going for one hour. I drank a coffee and got some snacks. 9 miles made me forget about the bad weather. It's 2 p.m. and we looked each other. 19 miles done. Oh Yeahhhhh.
