Christchurch - Quake city

We arrived at the State Highway 73 around lunch. This one leads us through a spectacular landscape right into Christchurch, which is about 150 km away from Arthurs Pass. We got our first ride from a lady from England and she never took anyone with her in her car. To avoid that we were the last one, we acted like gentlemen and took her every single doubt. Because she didn’t drive all the way into Christchurch, we got out in Sheffield next to a pie shop. That wasn’t too bad, because we were starving. Absolutely hungry, we entered the shop and thought, we would be heaven. Chocolate pie, veggie pie, tasty rolls and coffee was a good meal before we went out to do the last 90 km to the city. Cheered on by a girls school class and one hour of waiting, the last part was also done.

Yes, its true
The older couple dropped us off near the city center and our first goal was to find an accommodation for 3 nights. Unfortunately, the cricket championship took place that week and it was almost impossible to find a place to stay. The i-site did a great job. The young girl gave everybody a a ring to find a bed near the center with success. Thanks a lot for that.

At the reception we got a wonderful surprise. Someone touched my shoulder and as I turned around, I couldn’t believe who were there. 150 km away from the Te Araroa, on the same day and place we met Jazz and Cody again. After hugging each other, we met us for dinner and talked and laughed a lot. This was maybe the last time to see them, because their flight back home is coming closer and closer. @ Jazz and Cody: “It was nice to meet you guys and maybe we will see each other in America one day”.

A street art exhibition from different artists, e.g. Banksy, was a highlight from the YMCA Hostel. One whole room with stickers, another one with huge graffiti cans and pictures, one more which was painted half white and half colored and a light show which gave one picture hundred of different looks. This exhibition is for free and I can highly recommend it.

Destroyed Cathedral
Nightlife
The earthquake which took place when Ines and I were in Australia (2010), hadn’t just destroyed parts of the inner-city, it also cost for over 150 people their lives. Over 4 years later, you still could see some traces from the quake. For instant the cathedral at the Cathedral Square. To bring back the city life, Re:Start was born in 2011. Its about ship containers, which turned into lovely little shops. Bookstores, bakeries, cafes, cloth shops, a post office and many more should attract locals and tourists again.

We only got 3 days in Christchurch and it is very spread out. It wasn’t much time to see all of it but still worth a visit. Many people are saying that Christchurch is dead but they are wrong. Take a look by yourself. There is a lot to see. It is also time to get back to the TA.
