I thought the flight to Bangkok is going forever. The last 4 hours I tossed and turned my ass because I couldn’t stretch my legs. When the plane touched the ground, I threw my arms into the air and did my first steps on Thai lands towards the checkout. The officer put some stamps into my travel journal that allow me to stay 30 days in Thailand. At the exit I already could see the big smile from Ines who I didn’t see for 6 months. It’s a good feeling to see somebody familiar after a long time. After a Thai dinner at Subways we took a taxi to the hotel where I realised the first time how hot it is. I just sat on the bed and I sweated like hell from doing nothing. “Damn is it hot” was one of the phrases that Ines had to hear a few days long. It wasn’t a surprise after coming from New Zealand with its 14 degrees climate to Thailand’s humid 35 degrees.  

Ich dachte schon der Flug nach Bangkok würde niemals enden. Die letzten 4 Stunden rutschte ich auf meinen Arschbacken hin und her, denn mit Füße langmachen war nichts. Als der Flieger dann aufsetzte, riss ich die Armes hoch und machte meine ersten Schritte auf thailändischen Boden Richtung Checkout. Die Beamtin knallte mir noch ein paar Stempel in mein Reisetagebuch, womit ich mich dann offiziell 30 Tage in Thailand aufhalten durfte. Am Ausgang sah ich dann auch schon das breite Grinsen von Ines, welche ich nach 6 Monaten das erste Mal wieder sah. Es tat wirklich gut wieder ein bekanntes Gesicht zu sehen nach all dieser Zeit. Eine kurze thailändische Mahlzeit bei Subways und dann ging es per Taxi ins Hotel. Dort bemerkte ich das erste Mal, wie warm es hier ist. Ich sass auf dem Bett und mir lief der Schweiss vom Nixtun. “Man ist das warm”, war einer der Sätze, die Ines für eine lange Zeit ertragen musste. Ist ja auch kein Wunder, wenn man von neuseeländischen 14 Grad Celsius auf thailändische schwül heisse 35 Grad Celsius wechselt.

The Kho San Road with its bars, hostels, guesthouses, food stalls, clothes stalls, junk stalls, restaurants and discos is one of the famous backpacker roads in Bangkok. We wandered for a short time along the road and got offers like a Tuk-Tuk-tour around Bangkok, suits from Armani, visions from our further, razors and accommodations. We took the last offer and check into a guesthouse a few minutes later which costs us about 360 Bhat (9-10 Euros). These rooms contain mostly a king sized bed, a shower, a toilet and a fan which is very important otherwise it is impossible to sleep.

Die Kho San Road mit seinen Bars, Hostels, Guesthouses, Kleiderständen, Essenständen, Schnick-schnack-Ständen, Restaurants und Discos, ist die Backpacker-Meile schlechthin. Wir schlenderten für eine kurze Zeit die Strasse entlang und wurden mit Angeboten wie eine Tuk-Tuk-Tour (motorisiertes Dreirad) durch Bangkok, Anzüge für Mann und Frau von Armani , Zukunftsvisionen, Rasierapparate oder Unterkünfte bombardiert. Das letzte Angebot nahmen wir dankend an und checkten Minuten später in ein so genanntes Guesthouse für 360 Bhat (9-10 Euro) ein. Diese bestehen meistens aus ein Doppelbett, Dusche, Toilette und ganz wichtiger, ein Ventilator. Denn ohne ist das Schlafen fast unmöglich.

Bangkok is a city of contrasts and chaos which works out pretty well. Next to luxury hotels are hovels, the cable clutter here in town will throw every electronic specialist hands up in despair and the only rule in traffic is, there are no rules. Not only they have left-hand-traffic in Thailand but also the motorcycles which are the favourite vehicle for the Thais using every single gap. It doesn’t matter if it is a dead end road or the walkway. I don’t want to tell you about helmets or number of persons on these bikes. The most that I counted were 2 ladies and 3 kids. I wondered all the time why most Asian people are wearing a mouth protection. Now I know why. The smog from the traffic is very high. Nothing with fresh air from the backcountry.

Bangkok ist eine Stadt der Kontraste und des funktionierenden Chaos. Neben Edelhotels stehen Wellblechhütten, bei den Kabelsalat würde jeder Elektrofachmann die Arme über den Kopf zusammenschlagen und die einzige Regel beim Verkehr ist, es gibt keine Regel. Nicht nur das hier Linksverkehr herrscht, fahren die Mopeds, welche die Lieblingsfortbewegungsmittlel in Thailand sind, überall lang wo sich eine Lücke ergibt. Da spielt es auch keine Rolle ob es eine Einbahnstrasse ist oder der Fußgängerweg. Von Helmpflicht und Personenzahl wollen wir hier gar nicht reden. Der Rekord lag bei 2 Frauen und 3 Kinder auf ein Moped. Ich brauch mich jetzt auch nicht mehr wundern, warum Asiaten im Ausland immer mit Mundschutz rumrennen. Ines war auch einmal kurz davor sich einen zu holen, da der Smog vom Verkehr sehr hoch ist. Nix mit frischer Landluft.

The biggest contrast was the Buddhist temple Wat Pho am Fluss Chao Phraya which was mind-blowing with its high towers, golden figures, awesome handmade stuff and unique buildings. Now I’m definitely a tourists because and took one shot after another. The longer we walked around the shorter got the distance between knee and chin. We were not well dressed and respected the rules in the temple. We missed the inside of these temples but the outside was already overwhelming.

Der aller größte Kontrast war der buddhistische Tempel Wat Pho am Fluss Chao Phraya, welcher mit seinen hohen Türmen, vergoldeten Figuren, filigranen Handarbeiten und einzigartigen Bauwerken im Prunk erstrahlte. Jetzt gehörte ich definitiv zum norman Touristenpack, denn es wurde fleissig rum fotografiert. Je länger wir umherwanderten, desto kürzer wurde der Abstand zwischen Knie und Kinnlade. Da wir doch ein bisschen leicht bekleidet waren, respektierten wir natürlich auch die Regeln im Tempel und traten nicht ein. Aber das war überhaupt nicht schlimm, denn draussen gab es genug zu sehen.

We spend only 2 days in this huge city and had already enough from it. We booked a boot and bus tour to Koh Samui in order to experience the island life.

Nach 2 Tagen hatten wir aber genug vom Grossstaddschungel und buchten eine Bus und Bootstour nach Koh Samui, um das dortige Inselleben und die Menschen näher kennenzulernen.
