Welcome to Indonesia - From Dumai to Lake Toba

Because of our big excitement, we couldn’t sleep very well one day before the transfer to Indonesia. In the morning, we got a last breakfast in our favourite restaurant before we took off to the ferry. The price for the transfer to Dumai/ Indonesia was about 130 MYR. You should also have 35 US$ with you for the Visa on Arrival. It was a pleasant 2 hours drive with the boat which was just the silence before the storm. Why? Because we couldn’t get rid of all these taxi drivers who circled us like a prey. They didn’t accept a “NO”. Sometimes there were 5 people who were busy with themselves to make the best deal. In this moment we took our chance to get the hell out of there. We tried to make our way to the bus station by walking. It seems to be not common to do this. Honking cars made our ears bleeding and waving people made our arms getting numb. On the market, Ines found herself again with a baby in front of a camera. Hilarious! It was really nice to see all these people. Super nice and everybody had a friendly smile.

Our little session with the locals
Follow the rules guys
We took eventually a taxi to the bus station and forced ourselves with backpacks on the unmounted seat and took off twice as fast as a pedestrian. The journey to the bus station was very exciting. What should I say, “Again we survived”. For incredible 230000 Rupien we bought a ticket to Lake Toba. Was this a rip off, we don’t know and don’t even care at this time. The thought to sit on our bump for 15 hours made us happy. The people from Indonesia are very curious and so we found ourselves again in a conversation seconds later. I also got my first Indonesian lesson. Everybody giggled when I mumbled the first words in this language.

A comfortable bus drive looks different. Quotes from Ines: “Our farm tracks back home are much better” and “Roller coasters are boring” and I had to agree with her. The bus driver was also a very special person. Oncoming traffic was not a reason to stop this guy from overtaking. Sometimes we had to close our eyes because we thought we will hit another vehicle. The best part at all was the broken light from the bus. Usually you would stop the bus immediately and repair the light. Nope, not in Indonesia. Instead of stoping, the guy just honked more frequently and the navigator took apart the dashboard. What the hell? They didn’t find the fault after 10 minutes and stopped the bus. Thanks a lot. Finally we arrived in Paparat in the early afternoon.  A friendly “Horas” and we got in contact with Charlie and Ani who are locals in this town. We talked a bit about everything. They invited us for the next day to join them for a little adventure on the Smile Hill. Of course we said, “Yes”.

Just because of Charlie and Ani, the last two days were just amazing. They showed us a different side of the town like the Smile Hill. From up here, we got an awesome view above Lake Toba. We just sat there, watching the sunset. Slowly the sun turned the sky into red. On the horizon we already could see the volcanoes near Berastagi.  On our ride back, we stop in a little village. These nice people, mostly men, got not many tourist here. Before we tried to start a conversation we had to drink a milky liquid. This was Jungle Juice which is from a tree. “Natural and untreated alcohol”, they explained us. Cheers everybody. All of us were in good mood and suddenly they started singing and playing guitar. Especially one song touched the bottom of our heart: “Welcome to Sumatra, welcome to our country”, everybody was singing together. Goose bumps.

Coastline from..
...Samosir
The 20 km hike
For 2 days, we visited Samosir which is an island within Lake Toba. For 90000 Rupien we rented a motor cycle and cruised along the roads and saw all these beautiful traditional Batak houses with its unique roof shapes. Wandering along the alleys packed with little shops were also fun. From every corner came an “Horas, please have a drink”. We said, “Terima Kasih (Thank you)” and kept walking. On our last day, we packed our backpacks and started our 2 days hike across the island which is about 20 km. We came in contact with some very nice locals. Nobody is speaking english here and so we had to explain everything by body language. It was quite funny but it worked out for us. For one night we stayed in a beautiful Batak house and enjoyed every single moment. On the next day we kept moving towards Panguruan. We followed the path along the coffee plantations which makes the main income for these people. In Panguruan we are taking the bus to Berastagi which is next to the volcano Gunung Sibayak. We are already looking forward to this trip.
