Many people are saying that Sumatra is the real Indonesia. In that case, we are very glad to experience this. On the other hand, I would avoid a second journey. Why??? There are many reason. One of them is the rubbish. On my travels, Indonesia is one of the dirtiest country so far. Packages, plastic bags, cans and bottles were found everywhere. On the beach, in the river, in the ocean, on the road and in the wood. It seems that locals have no relationship to trash at all. One day we were witnessing that a lady emptied a full trash bin into the river. If they don’t throw the trash into the river, they are burning it. Nobody is worried about the smoke from the plastic which is actually not really healthy. A friend told us that boats going out to the ocean to throw trash aboard. The rubbish get separated. One place is just for tires and another one is for oil barrels. Awesome, isn’t it.

Viele Leute sagen, dass Sumatra das wahre Indonesien ist. Wenn das wirklich so ist, dann sind wir froh dies erfahren zu haben. Eine zweite Reise hierher würde ich aber vermeiden. Warum??? Es gibt mehrere Gründe, aber fangen wir mal beim Müll an. Indonesien ist das dreckigste Land, welches ich auf meinen ganzen Reisen kennenlernen durfte. Verpackungen, Plastiktüten, Dosen und Flaschen findet man überall. Am Strand, im Fluss, im Ocean, auf den Strassen und in den Wäldern. Es scheint so, als ob diese Menschen keinen einzigen Bezug dazu haben. Wir beobachteten Leute, die mit ihren vollen Mülleimern zum Fluss liefen und diese entleerten. Wird der Müll nicht in den Fluss geworfen, wird er einfach verbrannt. Niemand interessiert sich hier, dass der Qualm vom Plastik nicht wirklich gesund ist. Ein Bekannter erzählte uns, dass Schiffe raus fahren und Müll über Board werfen. Dort wird sogar der Müll getrennt meinte er. Es gibt z.B. eine bestimmte Stelle für Reifen und eine für Ölfässer. Toll oder.

It’s already normal to rip tourist off. They try to increase the prices for something, hitch hiking is non-sense (everyone want to earn some money), people were stealing who we liked and trusted and national parks rose entrance fees for over 300 percent (to keep the parks clean LOL). Try to obey every rule like wearing a helmet. The locals don’t do this but the police will be glad to catch a tourist. I just can advice you to learn a little bit Indonesian. People will treat and respect you in a different way.

Abzocke in Indonesien gehört zur Tagesordnung. Man versuchte uns höhere Preise aufzudrücken, per Anhalter fahren macht hier keinen Sinn (jeder will was verdienen), Leute die wir lieb gewonnen und vertraut hatten, haben uns bestohlen und Nationalparks erhoben die Eintrittspreise auf über 300 Prozent mit der Begründung die Weg zu pflegen und den Park sauber zu halten. Ha ha, das ich nicht lache. Man sollte sich auch an jede Regel halten, wie z.B. Helm tragen beim Roller fahren, auch wenn es die Locals nicht tun. Die Polizei wartet nur auf so eine Gelegenheit. Lernt ausserdem ein paar Sätze auf indonesisch. Die Locals werden Euch dann auf jeden Fall anders behandeln und mehr Respekt entgegenbringen.

Sumatra is quite similar to a big zoo. Money is more important to tour agencies than mother nature itself. Riding on an elephant, hugging and kissing orang-utans or tracing a tiger didn’t feel right to us. Some people will say that we are overacting, but we think that we should respect animals like humans. Travelling has always something to do with responsibly.

Sumatra gleicht einen riesigen Zoo. Tourenanbieter ist das Geld wichtiger als die Natur selbst. Möglichkeiten wie auf dem Rücken eines Elefanten reiten, einen Orang-Utan einen dicken Drücker bzw Knutsch zu geben oder den wilden Tiger aufzuspüren, war für uns einfach nicht das Wahre. Manche werden zwar sagen, dass wir übertrieben reagieren. Wir aber sind der Meinung, dass man Tiere genauso mit Respekt behandeln sollte wie Menschen. Reisen hat immer etwas mit Verantwortung zu tun.

Of course not every person or place is like this. I’m just writing about places where we have actual been. Between all the doom-mongering, there were still nice people and awesome places like Krui, Padang, Gunung Sibayak or Lake Toba. Anyway, the important thing is to be ready for Sumatra like it is. The truly Indonesia! Are you doing this, you will never have problems.

Natürlich kann man das nicht auf alle Leute oder Orte beziehen. Ich spreche hier nur von den Orten, wo wir auch tatsächlich waren. Und zwischen der ganzen Schwarzmalerei gab es auch super nette Menschen und schöne Orte wie Krui, Padang, Gunung Sibayak oder Lake Toba. Man sollte sich auf jeden Fall darauf einstellen, worauf man sich hier in Sumatra einlässt. Macht man dies wird man absolut keine Probleme haben.
